For companies to succeed in today's
economic environment, employers must hire and retain diverse
workforces and provide a workplace that offers a balance with work/life
issues. On
October 1, 2003, the Evansville-Area Human Resource Association in
conjunction with the Workforce Investment Board and Fifth Third Bank
honored and recognized companies within the Tri-State area who are
leaders in developing a workplace that embraces diversity and family
friendly practices. Dan Katz, local television personality
from WFIE, was the Master of Ceremonies.

Mayor Russell Lloyd, Jr. selected Helen Vazquez, Program Director of
the Guadalupe Center in Huntingburg, Indiana as the recipient
of the “2003
Mayor’s Diversity Award” for her efforts to welcome and facilitate
the assimilation of the area’s growing Hispanic population
into our community.

To promote diversity within our community, the program included a presentation
on Implementing Diversity Initiatives by Joseph L. Smith, Executive Director
of the Indiana Commissions on Community Service.
The EHRA would like to congratulate the companies that received an award
or were nominated for their leadership in providing diverse and
family-friendly work environments. In addition, the EHRA would like to congratulate
Helen Vasquez as the recipient of the Mayor’s Diversity Award
based on her outstanding leadership and pioneering efforts to
integrate Hispanics into the communities she serves.
A twenty-four page Resource Guide summarizing the best practices from
all the companies nominated for the Family Friendly and Diversity
Practices Awards was distributed to the people who attended the award luncheon.
