Art & Writing Contests
NEW THIS YEAR!
We are pleased to present diversity art and writing contests for children sponsored by the Young Readers program and EHRA. For children in the 3rd through 5th grades, we are featuring an art contest with a theme of “inclusion”. We will also be hosting a writing contest with a theme of “diversity” for children in the 6th through 12th grades. More details regarding the contests will become available here in mid-August.
Art Contest
Grades 3 - 5
We would like to invite students and teachers in the third, fourth, and fifth grade classes to participate in the “We Respect Our Differences” art contest based on the book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.
A Bad Case of Stripes is an excellent book to open dialogue about differences, respect and the importance of being yourself. This book addresses the issue of being worried about what others think about you. It also lends itself to talking about how it makes people feel when others laugh at them or tease them. Students are encouraged to submit an artistic entry highlighting what makes them unique and special.

Writing Contest
Grades 6 - 12
We would like to invite students and teachers in the sixth through twelve grades to participate in the New Voices essay program for September.
Topic: Diversity is the sense that no matter where you come from, who you are, or what your background is, there is a place for you. As a future leader, what change would you make to improve diversity in our education system?
Entry Deadline: Essays must be postmarked by Friday, September 12, 2008
